Podcasts are more than just true crime stories and comedy shows. They can also be an exceptional tool for professional development and for developing your career.

We’re pleased to announce the latest episode of our very own Acacia podcast ’What’s Going on in the World of HR’, where we explore some of the most pressing issues in the people profession today.

In this episode, we’ve tackled one of the questions we get asked a lot: how can I break into human resources or L&D for the first time – whether as a first job, or as a career change?

How to Get Ahead in HR and L&D

Finding the courage to get started is often one of the hardest parts of a process. That’s particularly true when it comes to career development. The sheer amount of information available can make narrowing down a course of action seem overwhelming.

That’s why we’ve dedicated this episode to making getting started in your first HR and L&D role as simple and straightforward as it can be.

This month’s podcast is hosted by one of our most distinguished HR and L&D tutors, Dr. Kay Maddox-Daines. She’s joined by Kate Nudds, an independent L&D recruiter and career coach, and the pair discuss the different ways to start in HR or L&D, how to get qualified and their top tips for applying to jobs.

They outline how they both got started in the people profession, as well as advice for those transitioning into the profession from another career.

We cover everything from how to identify what you’d like to do and how to get the relevant qualifications through to the current recruitment landscape and how you can improve your chances of securing that dream role.

Here are some of the top tips for getting your first dream HR/L&D job that we outline in the podcast itself:

  • Align your CV to the role that you're applying for.

As Kate succinctly outlines, the CV is the only document that your employer has about you. As a result, it needs to showcase your skills and be targeted to the position you’re applying for.

  • Make sure your social media profile is consistent with your career aspirations.

It’s really important to make sure that your social media profile is updated. Be sure to tell everyone you know about your aspirations for career development – really shout your career plans from the rooftops. You never know who might be listening, and what opportunities they might know of or have available.

  • Network, network, network (tell everyone you know!).

Networking (literally, just talking and forming connections with people in the profession) is key in Human Resources and Learning and Development. Find the right networks and you’ll usually be the first to find out about opportunities.

  • Don't give up!

Determination is so important when it comes to breaking into HR and L&D for the first time. Hold your nerve and don’t give up, no matter how hard it feels. You’ll achieve your dream career eventually!

Make sure to give the podcast a listen and a share! You can listen to all of the previous episodes of ‘What’s Going On In The World of HR?' here.
